Great Western Racecourse is sprawled on an expansive 70-hectare reserve that affords excellent views and provides ample space for camping. Visitors can choose from a powered or unpowered site, with the unpowered sites being free of charge.
The racecourse is easily accessible, and the huge turnout is testament to the popularity of the races. Located 220 kilometres from Melbourne, the journey takes about two and a half hours by car on the Western Highway. For those looking for public transport, you can catch a V-Line Train to Ararat and then connect via bus to Stawell which passes through Great Western.
On race days, gates typically open at 11am with the first race at 1pm. Check local guides to confirm. There is no dress code for general admission to the racecourse, shorts and t-shirts are welcome! You are permitted to bring your own picnic into the races (no glass), however BYO alcohol is not permitted. There is a licenced bar on site. Personal BBQ’s are also not permitted to be used at the racecourse.
