Hamilton Botanic Gardens

The Hamilton Botanic Gardens is a beautiful park set on four hectares with fountains, rare trees, animal and bird enclosures.

The Hamilton Botanic Gardens is very special as it has artistic, historical and botanical importance. The land site for the garden was established in 1853 and the plantation was first started in 1870 which makes the garden one of the earliest botanical gardens in Victoria.

Hamilton Botanic Gardens, Address, Victoria

The Hamilton Botanic Gardens were designed by William Guilfoyle, one of the greatest garden designers in Australia. He had also designed the famous Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne and when visiting both gardens, you will be able to spot the similarities between the two.

With his creative skills, he came up with a unique design approach when creating this garden. He had introduced curved pathways, sweeping lawns, colourful plants, lakes, islands, contrasting foliage as well as garden beds with cacti and succulents. William Guilfoyle’s rare plans and design sketches of this garden are kept in the Hamilton Art Gallery.

Hamilton Botanic Gardens contain an exceptional collection of plants from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This is the reason behind the significance of this garden. It consists of eight trees that are founded as significant tree species and they are noted on the Register of Significant Trees in Victoria.

The unique landscape style of this garden makes the Hamilton Botanic Gardens an important location in Victoria’s heritage. Along with Guilfoyle’s Garden, the Botanic Gardens also contain Cottage Sensory Garden, Bird Flight Aviary and Abutilon collection. It also has BBQ facilities and a playground for your kids to enjoy and have fun.

It is a great place to visit with your family during your vacation to Hamilton or the Grampians region.
