Melville Oval

Melville Oval is a popular sporting venue in Hamilton, with the greens typically used for hosting cricket matches.

The oval has historical significance because it was used as the main recreational reserve of Hamilton.

It was originally planned to be a Market Square, although it didn’t pan out that way since the land was found to be too swampy. The beatification scheme that took place in the early 20^th century was a major municipal achievement, commemorating William Melville, one of the most distinguished servants of Hamilton. The oval also has an Edwardian grandstand that adds grace to the park.

The oval has several highlights; these include the many notable trees are found within the grounds, particularly the Washington palms, which were planted at the start of the century. The drinking fountain located on the other side of the grounds was installed in 1910 by the Caledonian Society.

The oval has received recent upgrades, such as the installation of a new lighting system in 2015 which now enables night-time sports to be played.
